This week the Beavers did their second science experiment – the volcano experiment…. also known as the reaction between bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. The Beavers began by predicting what they thought would happen, they then did the experiment and wrote up their results.
When sodium bicarbonate and vinegar (acetic acid) mix, they react with each other and one of the things that is made is carbon dioxide gas plus water plus sodium and acetate ions.
The chemical equation for the overall reaction is:
NaHCO3(s) + CH3COOH(l) → CO2(g) + H2O(l) + Na+(aq) + CH3COO–(aq)
with s = solid, l = liquid, g = gas, aq = aqueous or in water solution
We did a second experiment where we varied the amount of bicarbonate of soda – we found that when you put in more bicarbonate you get a larger amount of froth.
The food colouring didn’t appear to react with the ingredients but did make it look amazing!
