Beavers learn emergency aid

This evening the Beavers were learning about what to do in an emergency. We imagined their friend had fallen off their bike and hurt themselves and discussed the importance of telling an adult as well as when to call the emergency services.

We also learnt the difference between a graze and a cut about what to do if somebody had either one. We then practiced cleaning and bandaging an imaginary cut and discussed why we clean cuts (to prevent infection).

The Beavers told me about cleaning cuts with vinegar as well as applying honey to wounds to help them heal. Honey has antibacterial activity, maintains a moist wound condition, and its high viscosity helps to provide a protective barrier to prevent infection whilst vinegar has antimicrobial properties.
